Book cover
This intimate story of Lynyrd Skynyrd tells of how a band of lost souls and self-destructive misfits with uncertain artistic objectives clawed their way to the top of the rock 'n’ roll world. Based on interviews with surviving band members, Whiskey Bottles and Brand-New Cars shares how lead singer and front man Ronnie Van Zant guided the band’s hugely successful five-year run and, in the process, created not only a new country rock idiom, but a new Confederacy in constant conflict with old Southern totems and prejudices. Placing the music and personae of Skynyrd into a broad cultural context, this book gives a new perspective to a history of stage fights, motel-room destructions, cunning business deals, and brilliant studio productions. It also offers a greater appreciation for a band whose legacy, in the aftermath of their last plane ride, has since descended into self-caricature..

An Interesting Perspective

I picked up this book on a whim. I'd watched a video of a live performance of Gimme Three Steps. The interaction on stage seemed interesting. I grew up listening to their music, sort of. No real expectations. But this is a really good book. The interplay among the personalities was interesting, and back in the day drugs and alcohol were everywhere. I was impressed by how hard it was for the band to get their break. The author can tell a damn story. There was never a dull passage. I also thought I knew the ending. Nope. This was definitely worth the time and money..

This book, by far is one of the best books I have ever read! I could not put it down. I loved the way the author was able to make me feel like I was actually sitting in front of him as he was talking about Ronnie Vanzant and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have always loved Lynyrd Skynyrd and this book just made me love them even more. The author does not hold back on their faults but neither does he hold back on their genius. This book is well worth the time to read and I would highly recommend it..

Long live Skynyrd!

Great overview about the band. I discovered this book from an excerpt in Guitar World magazine. Ronnie seems to have been the alpha male of the band and kept everyone in line (often with his fists). So a lot of the focus seems to be on Ronnie. Although you learn plenty about the other members. It's great to learn about the details of their iconic songs...like how Neil Young felt about being dissed in Sweet Home Alabama.

The book brings to life a lot of what the band went through and the part about the plane crash is presented in detail with great writing from the author. On a related topic, there is also a Muscle Shoals documentary that covers the legendary studios in Alabama and has some info about the starts of southern rock and Skynyrd's time in the studio.

This book is definitely worth reading.
